How Our Office Serves You
Alan Gurley has served as Monroe County Coroner since 1992.
Coroner Gurley began working in the funeral business in 1979 in Monroe County and in law enforcement in 1981. He began one of four stints with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department in 1988 and became interested in the job of coroner working there with the coroner at that time who was chief deputy. Alan has served in almost every position in the Mississippi Coroner’s Association including association president for 3 years. Alan retired from law enforcement in 2016 and works full time as coroner. Alan attended Mississippi State University.
The office of coroner has the jurisdiction to investigate any death from incidents that occur in Monroe County including natural deaths, homicide deaths, suicide deaths and accidental deaths.
The Monroe County Coroner’s Office employee’s three deputy coroners. Bobby Cleveland is chief deputy coroner from Amory, Norman Smith from Lackey, and Leigh Ann Minga of Greenwood Springs. Coroner Gurley and his staff fully meet the education and training requirements yearly as mandated by the laws of the state of Mississippi and work closely with the State Medical Examiner, Mississippi Forensics Laboratory along with local and state law enforcement agencies as needed during death investigations.
